The WCA 622 Mitigation Bank is a proposed freshwater wetland mitigation bank located in western Broward County, Florida, within Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA2A) of the greater Everglades system. The approximately 622acre site is intended to preserve highquality freshwater marsh wetlands in exchange for mitigation bank credits and to avoid development of a proposed rock mine.
Upon approval, the WCA 622 Mitigation Bank will provide longterm environmental protection through permanent preservation, incorporation into South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) ownership, and regional ecological stewardship of historically significant Everglades wetlands.
The WCA 622 Mitigation Bank is located within Water Conservation Area 2A, a roughly 105,000acre component of the Everglades that plays a critical role in surface water storage, flood control, aquifer recharge, and ecological connectivity. The proposed service area corresponds to the mitigation bank watershed approved by the South Florida Water Management District.
Total Site Area: 622 acres
Mitigation Activities:
The site consists primarily of herbaceous freshwater marsh dominated by sawgrass, with associated canals, levees, and pump infrastructure. The wetlands are hydrologically and ecologically connected to surrounding WCA2A marshes and provide essential water storage, flood resiliency, and wildlife habitat functions.
The WCA 622 Mitigation Bank will generate 130 freshwater wetland credits using the Uniform Mitigation Assessment Method (UMAM).
The mitigation bank will be permanently protected through conveyance to the South Florida Water Management District, which will assume ownership, operation, and management responsibilities in perpetuity. Longterm stewardship will follow SFWMD conservation and water management objectives and will include invasive species control, maintenance of existing hydrology, protection of listed species habitat, and integration into surrounding publicly managed conservation lands.
The WCA 622 Mitigation Bank will provide substantial regional environmental benefits, including:
